Lutron Lighting and Shading Systems

Modal AV is a Lutron dealer working with HomeWorks, RadioRA 3, RA2 Select and Lutron motorised shading across London and the Thames Valley, including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

We review the property, electrical plans, light fittings and window treatments before recommending a platform. The result may be a focused retrofit, a whole-home system or a planned combination across different parts of the property.

Light That Works at the Wall

A considered Lutron system puts the controls used every day in the room. One labelled keypad can recall the lighting and shading needed for arriving home, cooking, entertaining or closing the house for the night. The app remains available without becoming the only practical way to operate the space.

That simplicity depends on decisions behind the wall: compatible fittings and drivers, the correct dimming method, suitable shade power, clear button labels and programming tested in the finished rooms. Modal AV carries those decisions through to commissioning rather than treating the keypad as a decorative final layer.

Which Lutron System Fits the Property?

These are useful starting points, not fixed product rules. The right choice depends on the number and type of loads, the wiring already available, the control points, the shading scope, the wider automation system and the investment available.

RA2 Select

RA2 Select can provide a focused route into Lutron lighting and shading for smaller properties, limited scopes and secondary rooms. It is useful where straightforward wireless control and app-based setup meet the brief without the deeper programming expected from the larger platforms.

RadioRA 3

RadioRA 3 is a professionally programmed wireless system suited to many medium-value homes, refurbishments and projects where new control wiring would add unnecessary disruption. It allows a broader keypad and integration strategy than RA2 Select while using Lutron Clear Connect rather than the home's Wi-Fi for control communication.

HomeWorks

HomeWorks is generally considered for higher-value homes, substantial refurbishments and new builds with centralised or hybrid lighting, detailed keypad requirements, extensive shading or wider control-system integration. It gives the project team more scope to plan the lighting architecture around the property rather than around a single room.

A project does not have to follow a simple product ladder. Different Lutron systems can be used in different areas where that keeps the specification proportionate. We define the boundaries first because programming, app behaviour, interfaces and future support must remain clear.

Intelligent Lighting Without a Separate Control Bus

Lutron's current UK range includes compatible Ketra and Orluna intelligent light sources as well as conventional load control. On an appropriate project, wireless addressability can allow individual fittings or zones to be configured without adding a separate DALI control bus.

That does not remove the need for an electrical plan or compatible equipment. The light source, power, wireless coverage, controls and required colour behaviour still need to be specified together. We use the technology where it resolves a real project constraint rather than adding it as a default feature.

Lutron Motorised Shading

Lutron shading can be specified independently or coordinated with the lighting. Triathlon can suit suitable wire-free applications. Sivoia QS provides a wider wired shading architecture. Palladiom places particular emphasis on the visible brackets, roller and hembar where the window treatment forms part of the interior detail.

Modal AV is trained to specify, supply, install and commission Palladiom Wired Shading. We review the opening, fabric, fixing position, power, cable route, pocket details and controls before an order is placed. Wired and wire-free products each have a place; the decision depends on the building and the intended finish.

Motorised shading typically starts from £1,200 per window including VAT.

Decisions to Resolve Before Site

Lutron affects the electrical layout, lighting schedule, ceiling plan, joinery, window treatments, equipment location and visible controls. Early review gives the architect, interior designer and electrical team time to resolve those interfaces while the drawings can still change.

We begin with the current plans, lighting schedule and window-treatment information where they exist. The project record then defines:

  • the fittings, drivers and loads being controlled

  • the required dimming or switching method

  • centralised, local or wireless control architecture

  • keypad positions, finishes, engraving and scene intent

  • processor, panel, rack, network and power requirements

  • shade type, fabric, measurements, power and fixing details

  • connections to Crestron, Control4, Savant or other agreed systems

  • testing, programming, documentation and handover requirements

The written quotation follows the agreed scope. It records what Modal AV is supplying and which work remains with the lighting designer, electrician, blind contractor or wider project team.
